GENERAL FAQs
-
Plan for about an hour of shooting time for each of your looks. Plus another hour for consultation and hair and makeup time.
All headshots sessions include 30m of wardrobe consultation and setup time at the top. We‘ll review the wardrobe you’ve brought and strategize our game plan for the looks we plan to capture.
From there, we’ll address what needs steaming and get you through hair & makeup and into a look to execute the plan.
-
The combination of: wardrobe + lighting + background = a Look.
Taking off a jacket or a layered shirt doesn’t count as a new look. You are encouraged to wear layers to help get the most out of a look.
BRING 3-4 OPTIONS FOR EACH LOOK. Please, please, please, bring more clothes than you think we need. We cannot shoot what we don’t have to work with during your session.
Avoid logos, graphic tees, and hats unless specifically needed for a particular type of look.
Keep in mind that the more focused and specific your ideas for casting type, wardrobe, and how you’d like to use the images are, the better the resulting headshots.
If you have representation of any kind, please check in with them before your headshot session to see what looks they might recommend you prepare to capture.
If you don’t have representation, please let us know when you book your session and we’ll include a couple helpful resources to help you best prepare.
-
No retouching whatsoever is permitted for digitals.
Headshots packages include two minimally retouched images sized for print.
Minimally retouched means we’ll edit the image to make you pop more than you did before. We’ll also remove distracting minor blemishes like acne that won’t be there in six to eight weeks.
Keep in mind though that things like wrinkles, scars, and skin texture are what make us human, unique, memorable, and perfectly fit for certain roles. These areas will not be retouched.
Additional retouched images can be purchased for $15 each.
Retouched images have a 7-14 day turnaround time, but can be rushed upon request.
-
It is highly recommended that you add a professional hair & makeup artist for your headshots session.
Photography makeup is specialized, and the artist stays throughout the session for touch-ups, catching flyaways and making changes.
An additional 30 minutes of session time are included for hair and makeup to be applied.
The hair and makeup artist is paid separately on the day of your session.
-
Having someone on set to handle the additional close up details makes all the difference between getting good vs. outstanding images of you.
This is why adding a professional HMUA is recommended for all headshots sessions.
Outside HMUAs are welcome, but must arrive with you fully camera-ready.
You are free to do your own hair and makeup, although it is not recommended.
Please arrive camera ready for your session if you opt to do your own.
-
Want both?
Sure thing, just please let us know in advance. It makes a difference for our scheduling.
We allot 15 minutes for hair curling and shaving.
-
No.
What you should do is focus on 2-5 clear, strong, looks that help show you in your most marketable light; bring way more clothes than you think are necessary; and add the hair and makeup artist.
Aim to have something commercial, something theatrically dramatic, and something lighter in tone as well, which, could be comedic.
From there you might consider some looks that play into any specific types that fit you well.
The goal is to have images you can use to self submit for student films, short films, vertical dramas, commercials and other non-union work to build your reel and resume, as well as to help you obtain representation to further your career.
On top of asking friends, family, fellow actors and acting coaches for casting archetypes that fit you well, be sure to sign up for a profile and look through casting notices on Actors Access and Casting Networks to see what’s currently casting for your demographic. Look for roles that you’d actually self-submit for and note the descriptions used to describe the characters, because those are the qualities they’re looking to see in the headshots they’re reviewing.
For each of your looks, you can even go so far as to make a small moodboard. On it you can put outfit inspirations, characters from shows that typify the look, vibe and color references, as well as other headshots you see that you like that fit for the look you’re putting together. You’re even invited to make a 15 song playlist for the look. As you can tell, preparation helps get the best quality results.
For men: If you normally wear a short beard and never clean shave, then it won’t be as helpful for you to get headshots clean shaven or with a wildly long beard if that’s not your norm. You need to be able to show up in the self tape and at the callback looking like the version of you in your headshot.
If your look changes substantially, like, say, you dye your hair, cut it way shorter, grow a long beard, or plan to stay clean shaven since the last time you had headshots taken, then that would be a good time to get new ones and update your marketing materials if you plan on continuing to audition.

Great question!
If you’d like to have some images of you for press releases, casting notifications, social media postings, or to build out your modeling portfolio, we’d consider those as editorial style shots.
It counts as a look so you won’t have to select anything different when you book.
A few examples can be found sprinkled in the headshots gallery.
